The eyes of animals look a lot like alien worlds

Continuing his fantastic series of macro shots of the eyes of animals, here is Suren Manvelyan's Animal Eyes 3. The close up shots of the fish and reptiles and other animals in this series look positively alien when seen up close. I thought they were artist's rendering of deep space planets from a sci-fi movie. » 9/17/14 11:24pm Yesterday 11:24pm

Turning a chunk of wood into something beautiful is satisfying to watch

Here is Alan Holland performing his craft: woodturning. He takes a big chunk of wood, spins it on a lathe and shaves and cuts it down into something much more detailed. It's painstaking work but it looks absolutely rewarding. Getting to the finished product is like discovering something that was hidden underneath. » 9/17/14 10:24pm Yesterday 10:24pm

Once again, the Universe amazes me with a never-before-seen display of color and shapes that defies belief. You are looking at Puppis A, a supernova remnant that is 7,000 light years away and is 10 light years across (!) And yet it looks like microscopic view of a coral here on Earth. Amazingly beautiful. » 9/10/14 8:50pm 9/10/14 8:50pm

City street lights video feels like travelling through hyperspace

I stopped paying attention to the time, didn't care about where I was and got lost in the lights when I was watching this video, Eye Know, directed by Hiroshi Kondo. It's amazing. You start by moving through a city at night and following the street lights and end up feeling like you're doing drugs on warp drive. » 9/03/14 12:25am 9/03/14 12:25am

This beautiful starry sky is a cave full of glowworms in New Zealand

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day features an amazing photo by Phill Round. It looks like a frame from a Spielberg movie—an humanoid figure appearing at the base of a mountain, with the unknown starry sky of an alien world behind it. In reality, it's a man getting into New Zealand's Hollow Hill Cave. » 8/30/14 9:21am 8/30/14 9:21am
